Bonjour!

It’s August, and véraison is well underway. This is the moment the berries stop being hard green marbles and start turning color.

I’m happy to say I’ll be continuing my harvest streak started in 2023. This year will start early, at the end of August, thanks to the heat waves washing over Europe fast-forwarding everything.

All that fussing over ripeness has grapes on the brain, so let’s talk about one in particular.

If you’ve ever studied Champagne or done a cellar tour in Champagne, then you know one of the first things they tell you is that Champagne has three main grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, which everyone now seems to prefer to call, “Meunier.”

What they don’t tell you is that one of them was banned by law from Champagne's best villages for forty-two years.

Today, in preparation for the 3rd Annual Summer Champagne Flight Club, “Mad about Meunier,” we’re diving into the story of Champagne’s third grape. In the first of three installments, we’ll cover what Meunier is (and isn’t), plus an unexpected detour to a Nobel Peace Prize.

I’m going to try something different this time around. Since this post is exceptionally long, I will publish it in three installments. I’d be grateful to hear how you like (or don’t like) reading in a series format over getting one very long, nerdy post 😊
