Last time we talked about misused and abused wine words, it was back in July 2023. We covered dry, sweet and fruity, three words people love to say with total confidence and zero precision.
Today, we're tackling the word that might be the biggest offender: smooth.
"Smooth" is the wine descriptor equivalent of someone saying their first date was "nice." While it may be true, it tells me nothing useful. You could have met your dream guy or gal, or maybe they’re just generically inoffensive and you’re on track to polite your way into marriage.
And, unlike dry or sweet which are at least both technical wine terms, smooth isn’t.
Rather, "smooth" is doing the work of four or five different wine components at once. Plus, depending on whether you're drinking red or white, you might mean something totally different.
So, let's break down the common culprits that "smooth" covers, and give you words that will land you a better bottle — and maybe a second date.
